The City of Chelsea historical marker tells the story of Chelsea’s early settlement, growth, and incorporation as a city. It highlights early families, businesses, transportation, and the development of the community.
Brief History:
The marker states that Creek Indians once owned and hunted the land where Chelsea now stands. After the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1813, settlers began moving into the area, and by the mid-1800s several pioneer homesteads had been established. When the railroad came through in 1908, people began moving closer to the tracks, and the town of Chelsea, first called Melrose, began to grow. Chelsea was incorporated on March 1, 1996, with S. Earl Niven as its first mayor.
Location:
The City of Chelsea historical marker is located near Chelsea City Hall at 11611 Chelsea Road in Chelsea, Alabama.
